Dhirubhai Ambani is the founder of Reliance Industries Ltd, which is today the largest private sector company in India, and one of the largest contributors to income tax to the Govt of India.
Today the Reliance group has multiple companies that are run by his two sons: Mukesh Ambani and Anil Ambani, who have different management styles but very capable and effective in their own ways.
Dhirubhai Ambani was a keen observer, constant learner, and he took calculated risks. Some of them went right, and some did not. He was pragmatic in solving problems and he understood people very well. He believed in new technology, youth and speed.
Above all, he was a generous person with a good heart. Dec 28 is his birthday. Thank you Dhirubhai for everything. Your advice and guidance is really appreciated!
As India metropolis gets cramped for room, need for infrastructure development – road, bridges, industry parks, railroad is paramount. It will only grow as the GDP growth puts additional pressure on feeble Indian Infrastructure. Limited budgetary support is possible – the rest needs to come through an effective “recourse financing” more commonly – project finance. Lenders (banks/financial institutions) finance project based on credit profile of project and not that of the borrowing party and as the name recourse would suggest, borrower too has limited liability as security is confined to project assets only and not borrower’s balance sheet. In an interview with ET Now, Jim Rogers, Chairman, Rogers Holding, talks about the correction in global markets besides giving his views on commodities and India. Excerpts:
Q1: Global markets are correcting and everyone is saying it is because of Korea. Would you endorse that thought?
First of all, global markets should be correcting about this time because they have been pretty strong recently and there is always some reason to correct. This time, it looks like it might be Korea. Whenever you have threat of war, usually everything goes down at first, then you have to figure out what to invest in after the initial collapse. In my view, the thing to invest in is commodities because if there is going to be war, it is always good for commodities and if there is no war, then commodities will rally like everything else. Sometimes buying a new business isn’t what you’re looking to do. There’s a lot to go through and even more to figure out. However, you can also buy companies that are in trouble and make them into something better. This may seem difficult, but with enough investors, it can become quite the venture.
Private equity is pretty much when you invest in a company with very little money, or that is going bankrupt. You now own a piece of it and are responsible for it. On the other hand, you also have the potential to make the business sink or swim. This means that you are also responsible for repaying any loans you and the other investors take out for the benefit of the business.
You can take something that was previously failing and make it into a better company than it was before. However, to do this, you need adequate private equity funding. But also keep in mind that this isn’t a one person venture. You need help financially and to have other investors willing to help you along with enough funding to completely renovate and fix the business you are investing in. There are several ways to come across enough money in order to do so. One way is loans. Continue reading
