Job Title: Senior Director of Investments
Department Description: Sanofi-Genzyme BioVentures (SGBV), previously known as Genzyme Ventures, is a strategic fund that invests primarily in early-stage innovative companies in the core areas of interest of Sanofi and Genzyme. SGBV’s investments focus on rare diseases, oncology, vaccines and infectious diseases, and breakthrough therapies in other core areas of interest of the Group, as well as integrated care solutions.
The SGBV team has hands on approach to managing its investments, and it is important that the new Senior Director of Investment joining will share both the company’s values and their relevant life sciences and venture capital expertise. He/she should be able to be actively involved as a Senior Director of Investments immediately on their arrival in the business.
He/she will be a seasoned professional, bringing a demonstrably track record of successful investments and exits, and an active approach to management of portfolio companies. He/she will monitor new investments playing an active role in the invested companies’ growth.
The Senior Director of Investments will originate transactions, which are compatible with the investment policy through an active deal sourcing strategy. He/she will participate in the marketing effort to increase SGBV’s visibility and will contribute to the decision making process as a presenter of potential investment opportunities to the investment committee (Venture Approval Committee or VAC).
Key accountabilities, all under the management of SGBV’s VP and Managing Director
Portfolio Sourcing: Originate transactions, which are compatible with the group’s investment policy through an active and structured industry focused deal sourcing strategy. Ability to drill down into industry sectors and sub-sectors to identify potential deal opportunities.
Investment Analysis: Works with Group division technical and business teams; solicits input and advice from Group senior management, advisors, various Group committees, and others as appropriate regarding prioritization and selection of investment candidates. Consolidates information and provides recommendations regarding viability and strategic value of potential investments.
Direct Investments: Manages all internal processes of communication and coordination regarding investment candidates in order to prioritize and build consensus for possible investments. Independently leads investment process and directly manages negotiations with investment candidate management from start to finish while concurrently coordinating feedback from advisors and Group technical and business teams. Manages all aspects of key investment processes including all logistics associated with closing and investment, in close collaboration with Group Legal, Treasury and Accounting personnel.
Venture Approval Committee (VAC): Prepares presentations and reports, and presents to VAC. Principally responsible for content, style and presentation of quarterly reports and updates.
Portfolio Management: Maintains oversight and manages existing portfolio of direct and LP investments vis-à-vis financial performance and program development status. Proactively identifies areas of mutual strategic overlap between the active direct portfolio and Group divisions (ie, BDL, R&D, and management) and ensures constructive dialogue is established and maintained. Proactively coordinates with Group Accounting and Treasury teams regarding updates on portfolio for potential presentation to VAC or Executive Committee. Represents the Group as a board member or observer in portfolio companies.
Fund Investment Strategy: Contribute to the definition and revision of the investment strategy with a 12-month to 5 year horizon.
Additional responsibility beyond SGBV: Support other equity investment activities (ie, either Corporate or global R&D driven) on broader transactions that entail an equity component, as appropriate.
Qualifications
Basic Qualifications
MBA, required
10+ years of directly relevant business experience required in the Life Sciences industry, including 5 or more investment experience in a successful VC firm.
1-Value creation, through a number of Life Sciences investments and exits
2-Engaged style of investment, leading process from origination to closing and to eventual exit. Will have experience of actively working on all aspects of the transaction (business plan, due diligence, leadership evaluation etc.). Will have the ability of contributing actively to the growth and value creation of the portfolio companies
3-Life science investment arena especially in biotech
Preferred Qualifications
MD or science PhD is a plus
Entrepreneurial and self-starter spirit
