Industry Topic Dicussions coming up

Last week was active and interesting – we initiated Industry Dicussions in the areas of: M&A, Sales & Marketing, and Project Management – you will be able to see some of these new discussions in a week.

All these discussions are planned as a series, which means they will have multiple parts –easier for you to pick up, and easier to fit into the busy schedules of our contributing professionals.

We are going to arrange all these Industry Topic discussions in the Blogs section of our site: http://www.myorbit.tv/blogs/

Some of these discussions will be available to invited members only because of the wish of the contributing executive. And that is equally fine because MyOrbit.tv can be used both for public and private sharing of business experiences.

By end-June, we plan to feature about 8 industry groups (each group having a few blogs in it) that are created and run by our members – for their business or knowledge sharing.  Meanwhile, if you have any questions or want something to be discussed on this blog, write to us at: connect [at] myorbit.tv

Notes from Internet World 2007

The Internet World 2007 event took place in London from May 1 to 3, and was was like any other industry event – lots of brochures, gift pens and mugs, and workshops and seminars – with giants like Yahoo, MSN, Google, and also many start-ups. And like everywhere, it took a while to figure out which stalls to stop by. The event’s website: http://www.internetworld.co.uk

While a variety of topics were covered, two categories really dominated:

1. Internet Marketing – I think half the stalls were about it – showing ways to reach audience through post, emails, mobile text messages and specially designed websites – and also how to collect user information in a legitimate way. A couple of vendors said they could do a marketing blast for MyOrbit.tv – pushing it to 5 million people worldwide. Obviously we are not in that business, and I put a reverse question to them: “How can I best reach 500 people and engage them on a topic they follow?” They had no good solution for it, and in fact most firms in the event talked at 10,000 and above – “we can paint London with your message” kind of pitch – which may have a suitable role while releasing a mass market product – but in general the role of such ‘whole world marketing’ is reducing especially where we want to engage with the other person. That took us to the other main section of the event.

2. Web 2.0 section where one could learn about how to engage with the ‘You’. Various things were explained – Blogs, Forums, Better Layouts, etc. There were multiple seminars – most of which talked about how to make a website more interesting, how to enagage the audience and have them sign-up for different information feeds etc – these are real challenges of any business operating on the Internet, so the event made some contribution.

And, it was good meeting the managers of of Lulu.com and LinkedIn (one of their directors flew in from Palo Alto) – both of them have a strong value prop for an individual professional. There was a good interest in MyOrbit.tv from different companies, and a couple of them also played our videos on their giants screens to show other people what’s possible with new media.

Internet World 2007 opens tomorrow

Internet World 2007 opens tomorrow at Earls Court in London, and it will be worth spending a few hours there for MyOrbit.tv. The event will happen from May 1 to 3, and will be the biggest of its kind in Europe this year. We will get to see a variety of Internet devices and technologies.

We have a keen interest on any new products/trends for Internet payments (we have been hearing micro payments for a while, but tangible applications aren’t there yet), security technolgies (this field is really vast), collaboration and Web2.0 applications.

The big players like Google, Yahoo, MSN will be there, and it will be interesting to see what they are making of the new offerings.  We will share some highlights on this blog later this week.

What is MyOrbit.tv

It’s the first post on this blog. We had maintained a blog on another domain so far, but now merged our blog with the main site, which means all the industry viewpoints and experiences- in text, audio, and video – will be available directly on this site.

MyOrbit.tv is a member-driven Internet video channel focused on business and professional development. Our viewers and members are worldwide, making this an attractive platform to view and share professional experience and promote new products and services – all this at a fraction of current costs involved in marketing, new product launch, and customer interaction.

Of course, this channel won’t solve it all for you, but we have a plan – to add beneficial functionality and information – few at a time, so that a majority of our members can benefit from them. The discussions and videos on this channel are by active professionals and business executives, and we believe it offers great value to our viewers and members. This video shows how you can benefit from this channel.

We will pushing the boundaries of Internet streaming video. Some of the benefits for our Members and Viewers will come from applications like:

  • Industry discussions and debates with members – this gives original content, which everyone wants to watch.
  • New product demos by companies (eg. a medical diagnostics company demonstrating the benefits of its new diabetes management product, a SOX consulting company showing their solution framework, etc)
  • Career Development (eg. sales training and commercial presentation videos, job candidates presenting through video; crash the recruitment process through private videos)
  • Promoting professionals or new businesses (eg. a warehouse business showcasing its premises, security facilities, and client endorsements)
  • Pre-approved advertisements (by our Member council) launched by the viewers

Online Video Ads have big growth ahead

A study by Insight Express carried out for Advertising.com (the number one online advertiser) found that news and video streams were the most popular types of content for viewers.

  • News clips were favored by 48% respondents
  • Music videos were preferred by 47%
  • Movie trailers were next with 32%

While ads pay for some of the content that drove streaming growth last year, eMarketer senior analyst David Hallerman believes that the market for streaming ads may have built in limits.

“The current video ad inventory shortages both create higher CPMs and hold back a fuller flourishing of this market”

Last year in June 2006 McKinsey & Co. reported that Internet video ads were 80% sold out in 2005! “Assuming that marketers don’t increase the number of ads they place in each video stream, the maximum supply of video ads is currently about $600 million a year – far less than future demand,” noted McKinsey & Co.

My conclusion is that those new media players, who can make the production of video ads easy, have an opportunity to exploit. Microsoft Movie Maker is the easiest so far. But there is a need for better-effect templates that can make video editing on microsoft platforms easy for the marketing teams of most non-tech savvy companies. And once that is done, the growing presence of established Internet video channels like www.Youtube.com and niche channels like www.MyOrbit.tv (for business) make it easier to reach large or focused audience.
